Do our hearts grow smaller as we grow older?
I found myself spending way too much time thinking about this after I spotted this photo on Jada Pinkett Smith’s Facebook page. She posted it with the caption:

Sometimes, I do wish I could go back to being an innocent kid. Before I knew there was a thing called heartache. Before I knew what pain felt like. Before experiencing natural things that we all go through like betrayal. Those are all things that cause our hearts to wound and we become guarded.  The flipside is that all of those things that we experience, whether positive or negative, are what shapes who we are and what we eventually become. I don’t regret any of it.
Luckily, over the past few years, I’ve learned a bit more about compassion and empathy, and as a result, my once-battered heart began to heal. In my mind, it’s grown a whole lot bigger. 🙂
