A few weeks ago, a friend of mine contacted me and said I should meet former video vixen Karrine Steffans. We both live in the same area, we enjoy the same things, yada yada. I wasn’t sure what would come of it but I agreed. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was curious of what she’s been up to these last few years that she has been out of the spotlight. Aside from her drama with her husband Darius McCray (Eddie Winslow), I hadn’t heard much from her or about her.
We agreed to meet at the Grove on Father’s Day which was jam packed. I even saw Stevie Wonder walk by as I waited on the bridge. Shortly afterwards, Karrine crept up by herself and she immediately began the conversation (without a real greeting) by observing how many people were out and that she didn’t realize it was Father’s Day. I immediately thought of Kool G Rap (her baby’s father) and immediately made a mental note to inquire about his whereabouts and if they were still in touch later on. What I immediately noticed about Karrine is that she was moderately dressed, no fancy clothes, no heels, no make up. Very un-intimidating. Very girl next door and most of all, she wasn’t defensive.
We decided to walk over to my favorite family restaurant Dupar’s (which has the best breakfast) but since we both had eaten already, we settled for two Shirly Temples. She snapped off at the waitor a time or two and I was for sure he was going to at least spit in our drinks. Outside of that, she was pleasant and very open to talking about any and everything.
She told me why she no longer speaks to her mother (who ruined her sister’s wedding) and also told me that her father was in her life growing up but she also remembers her mother taking her and her sister away and not letting her father see them. She said she didn’t want to repeat those same cycles from her mother, so that was my cue to ask about Kool G Rap. She told me, “My son doesn’t have a father”, and so I mentioned to her that he had just told All Hip Hop that he has been trying to reach out to her and her son to no avail. She wasn’t buying it and mentioned that she has a website, and if he was trying that hard, that he would have contacted her through the site. She also reminded me that he had threatened her on live radio years ago and that when her son turns 18 (five years from now), he can make that decision to have his father a part of his life.
We moved on; and chatted about her issues with her husband Darius McCrary, what it was like meeting Oprah and Louis Farrakhan, her relationship with Bill Maher, what she wants her legacy to be, and her new book (which she hates. She told me the content of the book is just filthy and it was all her editor’s idea. She can’t wait until it’s release so she can just move on). The most enticing part of our lil chit chat was when we discussed Lil Wayne. I said to her, “I would ask you about Wayne but I know that’s old” and she responded, “Who said it was old”??? **sips tea** Without spilling too much, she revealed why she finally had to let her friendship with Wayne go and if they’ve rekindled since then.
I will drop the interview soon. In the meantime, here’s a fun little video of our first time meeting:

My overall perception of Karrine after our meeting is that she’s somewhat of a genius. I believe she would have excelled in a career in publicity/Public relations. She knows how to work the press and she knows how to develop relationships and use them to her advantage. She’s strategic in the way she operates her business and personal relationships. Another young girl could try to follow her model, but you have to have some serious business sense to get a three book deal after the one tell-all was released. She also has a deal with Larry Flynt Hustler Club as well as a development deal with Fox based on her Vixen Manual book. It’s almost mind-boggling.
