Back in November, I came face to face with a cardboard cut-out of RuPaul during Rihanna’s 777 Tour and I thought to myself, “She’s on to something”. Although she was not on the tour, Ru Paul had one of the strongest presence on the plane which translated over to social media. How cool?
Recently, Digital media strategist Mark Luckie delivered a lecture on social media strategy at a conference and he pointed out a few ways that Ru Paul engages his audience through the use of social media.
Here are a few quick tips from his lecture below:
**** First, in this day and age, it is a must for a brand to have social media presence on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. If you don’t have one or the other, go and create one NOW!
1) Utilize hashtags to centralize the conversation on all three platforms.
Start a hashtag for your brand and find a way to put those hashtags in front of people. In return, people will join in on the conversation, buy the products, tweet about the whatever you may be promoting and most importantly, tune in.
2) Think about the real estate you already have and how you can make good use it.
Use your Website, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to promote your projects and products. [During Ru Paul’s show, he conducts live chats on Twitter, Facebook and his website (which includes live chats with Drag Queens).]
3) Interact and have conversations with your audience outside of product promotion.
This strategy creates more feedback and engagement between yourself and your followers. When the time comes to promote your projects, you can jump in and say, “Hey, I have a product to promote.” People will become invested, connected and will less likely feel as though they are being bombarded with promotion.
