My friends think I’m absolutely insane ever since I installed a giant pole in the middle of my living room, but hey, a girl’s gotta get her workout on. Plus, I use it as a separator so it actually doesn’t look that bad 🙂
This year, after I moved back to California, I vowed to indulge in fitness a little more since I do a lot of work from home (and am not as active is when I lived in New York), so I ran to the nearest Equinox and purchased a membership. On the first day, I went with my Ipod and had plans to run on the treadmill for an hour while I listened to music. My best ideas come either in the shower or on the treadmill. As soon as I walked in, I was hounded by a fitness trainer who convinced me after 15 minutes to do an hour work out with him. “Look man, I just want to run on this treadmill and think,” was what I mumbled to myself as I followed him to a workout area. The next few times, I had the same experience and realized, ‘This gym thing might not be for me.’
I follow personal trainer, and pole instructor Nicole Da Pole on Instagram, and after reading up on her, I was surprised to know that she learned how to pole dance by installing a pole into her home and watching YouTube videos. She referred to the pole as ‘the new dumbbell,’ so after reading up on pole work, I found out that it helps strengthen and tone your muscles, increases flexibility, boosts confidence and strips away pounds. I’m in!
I could have joined a class, but I felt as though I wanted a bit more flexibility in terms of when I could work out. So I went shopping for a pole on Amazon. After reading tons of reviews on different poles, I ended up purchasing the X-Pert X-Pole (which I think Kendra Wilkinson was endorsing at one point.) The price was a little steep, but I feared that if I bought something cheap, my pole would come tumbling down in the middle of me swinging on it. And that’s not cute nor sexy lol!
My package arrived pretty quick! In maybe 2-3 days, and the pole came inside a carrying bag that makes it easy to transport, if you want to have dance parties or carry with you during travel. It also comes with a hex key that allows you to extend or adjust the pole’s height so that you can easily put it up and take it down.
I can’t say that the assemble was easy. I hired my repair man (that I found last year on craigslist) and it took him about 45 minutes to an hour to put the pole up, but I heard the more times you do it, the less time it will take. Basically, you’ll get the hang of it!
I swung on it a few times once it was up (and boy was I tired and my core muscles aching). I also had the repair guy swing on it just to make sure it could hold a substantial amount of weight.
We didn’t want to end up like this person.
Ouh! Fail!
I haven’t taken one lesson yet, because of my travel schedule but now that I have a few weeks off, I am going to set my fitness routine in motion. Over the next few months, I will update you guys with my progression. My goal is to be able to enter competitions one day, just for the fun of it!
In the meantime, here are a few videos that may get you motivated if you are interested in trying it out:
Bridget Bardot on how Pole Dancing Changed Her Life (This young lady was unhappy, unhealthy and overweight and pole dancing changed her life.)

Sidenote: I will say before Nicole Da Pole influenced me to get my butt up and try pole dancing, I first grew interested in the whole art of it when I read this blog over on Gangstarr Girl’s website
Here are some X-Pole alternatives for those who are looking for a least expensive option
The X-Dance Fitness Pole
The Pro-fit Professional Portable Dancing Pole
Also the poles are very hard to grip. You may need Dry Hands Gripping Solution, pole dancing ankle protectors, and/or Mighty Grip Pole Dancing Gloves.

@LASHAYESHANTE, are you taking classes too or just the dvds at home?
@Necole, i am actually just looking at youtube at home, and learning the moves. People like iloveracing25 , and Ms Dirdy Birdy. She is actually a great teacher she shows you moves step by step. I plan on taking atleast one class just to learn how to properly lift hold, and point.
@LASHAYESHANTE, Thanks for the suggestions. I just bought three dvds on Amazon and planned to start them this week. I’m going to follow these girls that you suggested on youtube as well to see what I can learn. I can’t wait to do my first video once I learn some tricks 🙂
How is the pole dancing? I’m ordering my pole today.. is x dance pole just as good as x pole?
