Necole Kane wears many hats. CEO/founder of media platform xoNecole, former celebrity gossip blogger, bodybuilder, and now founder of My Happy Flo, a supplement helping Black women have healthier periods and create hormone balance. How did she go from creating a media site to making her mark in the vitamin industry? She says it was due to embarking on a holistic wellness journey after her parents both passed away at an early age.

“My parents’ deaths at the age of 41 and 42 were from illnesses that were caused by poor nutrition and lack of education. It really was the catalyst for me venturing into a holistic health journey at the age of 35. I moved to Arizona and embarked on a journey of healing. Losing my parents so early really made me ask myself, would I be okay living my life as a spectator to other people’s lives (as former gossip site runner Necole Bitchie) instead of living my own. As I dove into certification courses in nutrition and hormone health, I started seeing a common link between our menstrual cycles, the development of fibroids, breast cancer (which my mom died from), and our overall health as women.” Kane was mind-blown by the statistics that estimate over 80% of Black women will be diagnosed with fibroids by the age of 50 and was even more astonished that the culprit of most reproductive health issues was estrogen dominance.

After some time, Necole became intrigued with supplements and the power they had. “I was constantly sharing about vitamins on Instagram, and I became an expert.” The xoNecole founder shared how she became a student and immersed herself into holistic nutrition when she moved to Arizona for over two years while on her healing journey and her health improved in many areas, including her period.

“My periods were so severe I remember I went on a girls trip to Thailand, and I had to sit out the first two days, and my cramps were so bad I couldn’t even get out of bed. Our periods are a monthly report card and a telltale sign of what’s going on with our overall health, but we weren’t taught that. So many of us were handled a pad and told good luck, but painful periods aren’t normal.”

After Necole reversed the painful symptoms of her period with holistic health and supplements, she knew she wanted to help other women do the same. “If you’re carrying high levels of estrogen, which is common in Black women, it can lead to fibroid development and other reproductive issues over time. Before releasing My Happy Flo, 1,500 women filled out a survey I created telling me everything that was going on with their periods. Most of them were Black women, and over 90% of the women who had been diagnosed with conditions such as PCOSendometriosis, or fibroids, also revealed they had been on birth control. As I started to put the pieces together, I realized that when you go to the doctor as a young woman, they put you on birth control without a hormone test or no information of the risks associated with contraceptives. If you have painful periods, it’s normally a hallmark sign that you are carrying elevated levels of estrogen, and if you’re placed on birth control that has estrogen in it, you’re now at risk of accelerating the growth of fibroids and increasing the risk of developing tumors and breast cancer over time. And what happens is when Black women are getting off of birth control, their period comes back with a vengeance because unfortunately, all of the symptoms your body had that would have alerted you that you were at risk of those conditions were masked the entire time. “

This experience that many Black women can relate to was the driving force behind Kane’s creation of My Happy Flo. A vitamin that not only helps to address the heavy bleeding, intense cramping,  headaches, bloating, and mood swings that your period normally brings, but also your overall hormonal health.

And while designing a supplement that has been met with nothing but amazing reviews from women of color, Kane says your journey to a healthier period first starts with the relationship you have with your doctor.

“If I could tell anyone that is experiencing a painful period anything, I’d say that period pain is not normal, and to go to your doctor and if you don’t already, find a doctor that believes the pain you are experiencing.” says Kane after sharing that it wasn’t until she found a Black doctor, that she received the care she was looking for.

“I want women to become the CEO’s of their menstrual health. xoNecole is out here helping women become boss chicks and leveling up in their money and career, and My Happy Flo is helping women level up in their period.”
