We are two months deep into 2014, and I can honestly say this is the happiest I’ve ever been in a long time. Instead of making resolutions this year, I just vowed to start doing more of the things that I love [like personal blogging!!!] and less of the things that brings me headaches!
One of the vows I made to myself this year was to do a total overhaul of my closet. Some like to call this ‘wardrobe editing.’ My goal is to get rid of the dull black, white and greys, (which was reflecting my dark mood) and add some life to my wardrobe with tons of bold colors and prints! Just in time for the Spring!
As I started my wardrobe editing journey, I enlisted my friend Toye Adedipe (who’s a phenomenal stylist and fashion consultant) to help me add awesome pieces to my closet that are flirty, fun, bold, cheerful and most of all — affordable! Some of these pieces I will document in ‘Fab Finds’ or ‘What I Wore‘ over the next few weeks.
Here are my closet vows:
I Will Not Be Afraid Of The Dots
Polka dots can be terrifying, especially when it’s an entire outfit (Photo 3). I’m looking to experiment more in pairing a dotted top with cool pants or a skirt and a blazer (Like Photo 1 & 4). I also love how Beyonce has a different color top and skirt which makes the dots less overwhelming.
I Will Wear More Pant Suits
I love pant suits, and they look even more feminine when paired with a sexy or printed top!
I Will Wear More Neons
Neons will bring life and happiness to any room. It screams ‘Happiness!!!’
When All Else Fails, Mix Those Prints
Mixed prints are so daring and are normally worn by people who love adventure and love to stand out. A rule of thumb is for the top and bottom to have at least once color in common, and to make sure that the patterns complement each other.
That’s my closet vows for 2014 as I do a little wardrobe editing!
Also I vow that my closet edit will not break the bank. Although I want to add life and color to my closet, it’s just not practical for me to spend tons of money on new clothes. Especially extremely high-end pieces and luxury designers.
Most of my selects will come from thrift shops, consignment shops, and stores like Top Shop, Guess, Target, Forever 21 and Urban Outfitter, as well as independent designers and boutiques. I’ve also started a Poshmark closet which most people use to sell clothes to buy clothes. Even trade off 🙂
I haven’t uploaded anything yet but it’s coming later this week 🙂
Are you down for the wardrobe edit challenge? What are some things you’d like to add more of to your wardrobe?
Skirts and dresses
Taking color chances in my shoes (I play it safe): I’m a choc, black, or grey shoe wearer, but I have been buying green lately. I just play it safe then take a chance (having $$ helps in that dept) lol
Me too! I used to buy black in everything: sandals, heels, boots, all sorts of variations of heels in black. I’m still afraid to buy white shoes!
@Necole, may i suggest an alternative to white shoes? Buying a shoe in a really light gray helped me conquer my fear of white shoes (I bought the Frited shoe from Aldo). Unexpectedly, it turned out to be more versatile. When I wear a white necklace, I look like I have on white shoes. When I wear something darker, people can tell that my shoes are light gray. Perfect compromise 🙂
@hoyalawya, yaasss! I’m going to have to try this. Thanks for the suggestion!
OMG! White shoes?? Bought a pair for an “all white” party…but haven’t touched them since, lol
Better quality staple pieces. Blazer, pencil skirt, little black dress, nice clutch, a bomb trench coat, better jeans just to name a few…ahhh but my babies come first so..
They all Look A Hot Mess On These pics
More bold colors!
Im Lovin Yonce & Halle Berry in these pics!
Hello,
I am so happy you will be working with Independent designers and boutiques. Normally Indie designers have the best pieces you can find. I would love to help you in your journey.

Beyonce’s outfit would look better on her sis. Amber is my girl but it’s a bit much. Halle and that white girl looks bomb to me. Anyways, id def add more colors to my wardrobe 🙂
halle berry hands down is the best dresser.
One suggestion, I agree with playing it safe with your finances as far as watching how much you spend on designer pieces. However, you will find tha buying items from places like Forever21 and Urban Outfitters will cause you to spend more money because the items are not high quality pieces. You might find something you adore but have to end up replacing the item soon after because it has fallen apart due to the low quality. So keep that in mind when buying certain pieces (bags, shoes, coats, jewelry, etc) because you might think you’re spending less but essentially, you end up paying more instead of having something you can keep for years to come.

@Jeri Smith, Im in that same boat with two lil kiddies…so I just try to put something aside for mama once a month to update my wardrobe..I usally hit up a thrift store and carefully select interchangeable pieces…or put things on layaway.. but like a mommy, I always say to myself before i buy something..” do my girls have everything they need.” lol so I dont feel guilty
