My assistant flew to Los Angeles from Florida this past week to assist me with a huge project I’ve been working on over the past few months. Our history is very interesting as we met on the internet and she had worked with me as my full time assistant for atleast 3 full months before we actually met in person. Her first time working with me face-to-face was last December in New York City. During that week, I shot my Born Bitchie Apparel Look Book and filmed BET’s 106 and Park. It was festive to say the least but she made it through and fit right in.  This week makes the second time we’ve met face-to-face since she’s been my assistant (in over a year) and you would never know that. We just mesh so well.
Although I get tons of resumes every day, there was something unique that stood out about Kimmy. She was very consistent, driven and she always made it appear as though she knew the answers when sometimes she didn’t. One thing I’ve learned during past internships is that when someone asks you to do something, even if you don’t know how to do it, act like you do…and either go and ask someone else or look it up on the internet. Whatever you have to do to make sure you deliver results… do it, however, do not tell the manager/boss/or whomever it’s something you don’t know how to do because if they have to keep asking someone else to do what they’ve asked you to do first, then that other person will definitely get promoted to a higher position before you do. Kimmy swears that everything I ask her to do is easy and to be honest, it probably is. My main concern when I want something done is having it done in a timely fashion (meaning the next hour..lol) and that’s how I determine who ultimately ends up joining the team.
Here’s the timeline: I offered Kimmy an internship in September of 2010. She over-delivered on her duties and the internship turned into a paid position a month later. In 60 days, she found herself working as my full time assistant. I had no idea how this arrangement was going to work when I hired her as such, being that we lived in two different cities, but it’s been over a year and she’s done an incredible job.
She’s ready to make the big move to LA soon and I can’t wait to see what the future holds…
